Greeting
Friends,
Making
speeches in public, church or giving professional
presentations can leave you with butterflies in your
stomach and your legs feeling like jelly.
Your
mind can become cluttered and confused and your
voice can race and somehow not convey the confident
assured tone you had planned.
Public
speaking is a common source of stress for everyone.
Many
of us would like to avoid this problem entirely, but
this is hard to do. Whether we work alone or with
large numbers of people, eventually we will need to
speak in public to get certain tasks accomplished.
And if we want to be leaders or achieve anything
meaningful in our lives, we will often need to speak
to groups, large and small, to be successful.
I
have studied the biographies of some of the
greatest, most influential people of all time, and
I've interviewed hundreds of people who are
seen as leaders in their careers and are leaders in
their houses of faith.
Every
one of these people have had one single thing in
common --Each knew how to speak in public with
confidence and influence the people around them. At
that time I started this research, I had never
attended any formal public speaking training course
or public speaking seminar, but I knew that if I
wanted to be esteemed by my peers, that I had to
master the skill of public speaking and overcome my
public speaking anxiety.
Studies
show that 87% of a person's income is directly
attributed to that person's ability to confidently
speak in public.
Be
Respected !
There
is a certain amount of respect that individuals
receive when they can stand on their feet and convey
their ideas effectively, because when they do this,
they are doing what 95% of the people in the
audience wish they could do.
You Don't Have to be PERFECT !
Many
of us have observed public speakers and thought to
ourselves "Wow, I could never be that smart,
calm, witty, entertaining, polished . . . or
whatever."
Well,
you don't have to be brilliant, witty, or perfect to
succeed.
That
is not what public speaking is all about. I know it
may look that way, but it's not. You can be average.
You can be below average. You can make mistakes, get
tongue-tied, or forget whole segments of your talk.
You can even tell no jokes at all and still be
successful. It all depends on how you, and your
audience, define "success."
Believe
me, your audience doesn't expect perfection.
I
used to think most audiences or congregations did,
but I was wrong! Before I discovered this, I used to
put incredible pressure on myself to deliver a
perfect performance. I worked for days to prepare a
talk. I stayed up nights worrying about making
mistakes. I spent hours and hours rehearsing what I
was going to say. And you know what? All this did
was make me even more anxious! The more perfect I
tried to be, the worse I did! It was all very
disheartening (not to mention unnecessary)
The
essence of public speaking is this: give your
audience something of value. If they walk away
feeling happy ,informed, inspired or entertained,
they will consider their time with you worthwhile.
Public
Speaking Fear Doesn't Just Hurt You !
Fear of
public speaking doesn't just hurt you it hurts the
audience.
It
harms the crowd because the number one response to
nervousness is to "just get through it." That
attitude makes us self-centered instead of
others-centered.
Just
getting through it causes many speakers to avoid
eye-contact, becoming negatively "you" based,
and rush through the message in a monotone voice.
All of which results in speaking AT and not TO a
group.
Avoiding
Eye-Contact. Nerves create a need to
hide. So what do we do? We don't look at anyone.
We look down or look away. If we can't see them,
they can't see us, right? We're hidden in front
of a crowd of people.
Becoming
negatively "you" based.
This is another bad move. Anxiety makes us
impersonal. It tends to make it sound like me
against you. "Here's what YOU need to do."
"YOU wouldn't have these problems in YOUR
company if YOU."
Public
Speaking Techniques and Skills
Wouldn't
it be nice if, instead of turning to jelly, you
could learn to enjoy speaking in public, writing
your own speeches and presentations and most
importantly, getting your thoughts across in a calm,
assertive and impressive manner?
Imagine
yourself at your most confident in public. Perhaps
it's just a few confident words in front of your
team at work or church or maybe a large presentation
to the entire Sunday School. Maybe you have to give
a best man's speech or say a few words at an
important event. The chances are that at some point
in your life you are going to be involved in public
speaking. If
you can learn to overcome your fears and become
confident in this area then just about anything is
going to seem possible. It could alter the way you
think about yourself, the kind of jobs you apply for
and your skills in other social settings.
"Just
say yes! You Can Do It!"
